Syrian Army Swoops On FSA Insurgents In Homs, Hama

Sep 6, 2012
The Syrian Army has swooped on foreign-backed insurgents in the western flashpoint cities of Homs and Hama, killing a large number of militants holed up there, Press TV reports.

On Thursday, Syrian government troops also rendered ineffective large supplies of arms, ammunition, and explosives, held by the insurgents in their hideouts.

In the meantime, Syrians are returning to their homes in Aleppo after Syrian f

orces cleared the city’s Seif al-Dowla neighborhood of insurgent presence.

Also on Thursday, Syrian soldiers cleared several other areas in Aleppo of insurgents and killed more than a dozen such anti-government elements in and around the city.

Many people, including large numbers of security forces, have been killed in the unrest that began in Syria in March 2011.

Damascus says outlaws, saboteurs, and armed terrorists are the driving forces behind the unrest and deadly violence, but the West and the Syrian opposition accuse security forces of being behind the killings.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said in an interview with Syrian al-Dunia TV channel, aired on August 28, that the “situation on the ground is better, but we have not yet won -- this will take more time.”

Anti-Syria Western regimes have been calling for Assad to step down, but Russia and China oppose the Western drive to oust the Syrian president.

Earlier in the day, Russian President Vladimir Putin called on Western governments to “reassess” their position on Syria, criticizing them for relying on terrorist groups such as al-Qaeda to overthrow the Syrian government.
