Several hundreds of Syria insurgents are foreigners: Opposition leader

George Sabra - New leader of SNC
The newly chosen leader of the main foreign-backed Syrian opposition group has admitted that several hundred foreigners are fighting along insurgents ag
ainst Syria’s government.

“We know we have some fundamentalists, maybe Syrian and Arab and foreign, but they are very few. From more than seven-thousand fighters in Aleppo, there are several hundreds of them,” said the president of the so-called Syrian National Council, George Sabra.

Sabra called on the international community to provide weapons to the insurgents “without any conditions.”

Sabra, who was recently chosen as the new SNC leader during a meeting in Qatar, also stated that the number of insurgents will increase “more and more.”

He said the insurgents need weapons and hundreds of millions of dollars in financial support in their fight against the Syrian forces.

The unrest in Syria began in March 2011, and many people, including large numbers of army and security personnel, have been killed in the turmoil.

In a recent interview with Russia Today TV, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad dismissed the likelihood of any Western-led military intervention in Syria and said the price of such intervention, if it happened, “is going to be more than the whole world can afford.”
